Engagement and wedding rings have been around for thousands of years. The ring is a symbol — a circle with no beginning or end, symbolizing eternity suggesting that marriage is forever. Ancient Egyptians fashioned rings out of papyrus. Romans fashioned them from gold or iron and they were often symbols of possession more than love. Archduke Maximilian of Austria gave Mary of Burgundy a diamond engagement ring in 1477 which popularized diamond engagement rings among the nobility. During many marriage ceremonies, the wedding ring is given as a symbol of love and fidelity. And it is a symbol to the outside world that this person is not available.
